Gary was introduced to groundsmanship through a college experience programme and rotated through various departments at Leicester City FC until he stopped at the grounds department. He moved to Leicestershire County Cricket Club in 1993 and worked his way up before moving to Nottingham Trent Bridge as Deputy Head Groundsman. 

He joined Warwickshire CCC at Edgbaston Stadium in 2011 and has led his team to win various GMA Awards for outstanding groundsmanship and commitment.
